im so genuinely disappointed that medusa only really appears in about 30% of this novel, if you were add all of her appearances together. And I spoke in hope: it felt of utmost importance that this boy should stay on my island – for a day, a week, a month. Medusa is definitely having her moment just now and Jessie Burton's take on the story doesn't let her down. Although Perseus may be at the center of these stories, it could be argued that it is the transformative powers of Medusa’s severed head that played a pivotal role in the hero’s subsequent adventures.

A powerful and poetic read, it provides a visceral and thought-provoking reading experience for a modern era. But the young Medusa offended Athena and was therefore cursed to be a terrible monster, forever hunted by men. Mila has a brother named Nicholas, and Nicholas is getting old enough to think about getting married. As with many of the Greek Myths, mortals should always be careful what they promise, and what they wish for from the gods. Medusa’s sisters, who are both immortal, think that the only way to stop a god is to ask another god for help.

Higgins seeks to reassert it here, depicting Helen of Troy sitting at her loom, weaving images of the war for which she was a pretext – “there was always an excuse for war, some symbol or stand-in.

Hermes and Athena snark all over Perseus, pointing out his many weaknesses and flaws, while providing some very real assistance.

Jessie Burton studied at Oxford University and the Central School of Speech and Drama, where she appeared in productions of The House of Bernarda Alba, Othello, Play and Macbeth.
