Avoid associating with “evil” or “mediocre” people. Instead, associate with people pursuing Christ. It is by humility that the Lord allows Himself to be conquered so that He will do all we ask of Him,” Nihilominus Deus hanc animam magis cupit. Haec libertas profundior est amoris et gaudia spiritualia in oratione. S. Teresia scribit amorem suum nondum satis ardentem ad suam opprimendam rationem. Students will have access to course content for the duration of the course. Course content will be available four weeks after the course ends. Recommended Reading

First of all, don't read this book straight through and expect to get meaning from it. This is not one of those books. few corrections made by the writer herself. I beg of the reader that he would in charity reverence the words and even the letters traced by so holy a hand, and strive to understand what has been written. He will then see that there was no need for corrections; should he fail to understand her, let him believe that the writer knew what she said, and that her words cannot be tampered with if they are not to lose their meaning; otherwise what was to the point will seem out of place. This is how books become corrupted, useless, and are finally lost.' 15 On the occasion of the ter-centenary of Saint Teresa's death, a photo-lithographic edition of the original was published under the direction of Cardinal Lluch, Carmelite of the old observance, Archbishop of Seville: will appear from the fact that she nearly always repeats the very words she had used in her Life and in the other reports of her interior progress, although she did not have these writings before her eyes, nor had she ever seen them since they first left her hands. Every one of her experiences must have produced a profound impression to be remembered so minutely after an interval of years. The chief goal of prayer is to better love God and neighbor. If the soul doesn’t have love, its prayer will suffer. Love is possible for those who banish selfishness from their lives. An unexpected taste of the 4th Mansion begins in the 3rd. James Finley shares ‘state of absorption’ examples in 4th Mansion experiences. The second translation, by the Rev. John Dalton, appeared in 1852 and has been repeatedly reprinted. It was dedicated to Bishop Ullathorne. Animae in hac tertia mansione operam dant ut peccata etiam venialia evitent. Bene utuntur suo tempore, in memoria ducunt horas, et desiderant poenitentiam. Caritatem etiam erga proximos exercere pergunt. Through storytelling and illuminative teaching, Mirabai Starr offers an embodied understanding of St. Teresa’s life, context, and essence.

After the publication of the Interior Castle by Luis de Leon, the manuscript came into the possession of Father Jerome Gracian, who, after having made a copy of it which is still extant, presented the original, on the occasion of a visit to the convent of Seville, to Don Pedro Cereso Pardo, a great friend of the Saint, and a benefactor to the convent. When his only daughter took the habit there, the precious manuscript was part of her dowry. Doña Juana de Mendoza, Duchess of Beguiar, a novice in the same convent, had it bound in silver and precious stones. It is still there, 27 and the present writer had the privilege of seeing it. It comprises a hundred and thirteen leaves in folio, but originally there must have been some more leaves which at a later period were torn out. These, it is presumed, contained the headings of the chapters. Unlike the Life and the Foundations, the text of the Castle is divided only by figures, without indication of the contents of each chapter, but the arguments which have come down to us are so entirely similar to those of the two works Just as a diamond gives great delight to the one who receives it, Teresa, at the end of her work on the Mansions, speaks of the great delight that one has who has explored the inside of the diamond of the Interior Castle.

Supernatural Recollection– The soul in the fourth mansions begins to experience this. God alone gives this grace, an loving awareness of God. We cannot bring about supernatural recollection through our own efforts. This prayer always transforms the person for the better. God takes over the will over time (uniting it with His) and then even the intellect and the imagination. Quamvis Deus animae dimiserit, tamen peccandi cupiditates tardat. Super peccata etiam anima multa habet ad aestimanda et mundana studia. Haec est anima in prima mansione. Gravissimum S. Teresiae consilium incipientis est se a peccato et attachiamento depellere conari. Iesus dixit quod divitiae et voluptates mundi adhuc possunt suffocare eos qui verbum Dei audiunt; Teresa Sanchez Cepeda Davila y Ahumada was born at Avila, Old Castile, 28 March, 1515; died at Alba de Tormes, 4 Oct., 1582.

This context is necessary to understand this book, or at least half of it. This is because, although ostensibly guide for prayer, it is also a handbook for avoiding the suspicions of heterodoxy. It is full of advice for those having mystical experiences on which visions to discount, because they are products of Satan or the imagination, and which visions to accept. Teresa also explains when you should yield to one’s prioress or confessor, and when you should stand your ground. St. Teresa was obviously acutely aware of the paranoid climate, and thus this book is as full of pragmatic counsel as religious guidance. She even explains in the beginning that the only reason she wrote the book was because she was commanded to. Incipe crucem potius amplecti quam ab ea fugere. Noli prohibere passiones accipere, eas vere desiderare incipe (propter Dominum). It’s important to know that spiritual dryness still occurs in the sixth mansions. 8. The Seventh Mansions

Interior Castle is not required reading for this course although it is highly encouraged. We recommend Mirabai Starr’s modern translation (Riverhead Books: 2004). The translation James Finley references throughout the course is from E. Allison Peers (Doubleday: 1961), which is out of print. Financial Assistance Teresa's main analogy, of the soul as a crystal castle with God dwelling at the center, is very powerful. Teresa frequently advises her nuns to know themselves. That is her most important practical advice. She insists that without self-knowledge and the resulting humility, it is not possible to make progress in prayer. The Prayer of Quiet– The prayer of quiet is “a quiet, deep and peaceful happiness in the will.” This happiness remains even though the soul does not understand what it going on. Here the will is so occupied in contentment and joy in God that not even the memory or intellect can interrupt it. Like supernatural recollection, the prayer of quiet is “infused” (not by our own efforts). It grows our virtue and reduces our desires for worldly things. We desire prayer and to persevere in it, all while becoming more selfless for God.

As the diamond reflects eternal love so His Majesty residing in the inner chamber of the seventh mansion is the Eternal Love drawing the soul into this inner sanctum of His abiding presence where it is transfigured and rests in God through the spiritual marriage. In this community of divine love is expressed also one’s love of neighbor.
