I cant speak for other plastic tyre levers but I have owned the same set of plastic levers I got from an halfords puncture repair kit around 2005-2008 and these have the little hook that wraps around a spoke you speak of... I think Evanscycles used to have the same levers in their repair kits although i dont know about now. Zefal have more or less the same in their universal repair kits (i seem to have misplaced the ones that came with my kit...) but maybe not as strong. The author may not like steel levers, but if he lived where I live and where the temps get below freezing and he has a flat and whips out his plastic levers and at the first pry the levers break, he'll switch fast to steel! Soma makes a steel core plastic levers, I've used these well below freezing without fail and without damaging the rims, no plastic one will endure being frozen, I've even had Pedros levers snap in two. The Muc-Off Rim Stix, while a little bulky, are very strong tyre levers that can help get even the most stubborn tyres off the rim. Key to the design is a very slim hooked profile on a fairly wide overall shape. It's easy to fit this under the tyre bead and make that initial pull off the rim. The chisel-shaped tip has a large radius, which is easy to scoop under the tyre bead. Rounded edges and a slippery finish make it easy to slide the tyre off the rim with a single lever. These levers may be the last you ever need to buy and if you do somehow manage to break them with your superhuman strength, Pedros will happily replace them for you as they offer a lifetime warranty.an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product

Never had a problem since. Although once they've been on the rim and ridden the GP4000s are much easier to take off and refit He was heavily involved in the mountain bike boom of the late 1980s as a racer, team manager and race promoter, and that led to writing for Mountain Biking UK magazine shortly after its inception. He got the gig by phoning up the editor and telling him the magazine was rubbish and he could do better. Rather than telling him to get lost, MBUK editor Tym Manley called John’s bluff and the rest is history. Whether installing or removing the tyre, teasing it loose with the smaller lever and then changing to the larger one is key. Unlike makeshift solutions, tyre levers are specially designed to protect the rim and inner tube from the force required to seat a tyre bead. Park Tool’s plastic TL-4.2s have a wide tip with a precise edge that makes it easy to initially lift the tyre off the rim.Thetyre lever, though seemingly one of the simplest and most basic of cycling tools, is one commonly used by almost every cyclist, and unfortunately, one often responsible for unnecessary frustration. Really, what is more fun than flatting far away from home, being thrilled you lugged that spare tube and pump, and then having your tire levers snap in two? Hmm having seen the video if you tried this with Marathon Plus tyres the bead would pop off behind you as you slid it round - looks like it still needs a tyre lever to stop this. Kil0ran agreed: 'They're only let down by poor instructions which lead to people using them wrong. Originally designed to help fit Marathons they work brilliantly for tight tubeless tyres. Only lever which enabled me to get some GP5000 tubeless tyres on my rims.' Value Proudly proclaiming support from Dragon’s Den, Stafford’s Tru-Tension has created something brilliant with the Tyre Monkey. At 10cm, the slightly curved handle sits comfortably in either hand and provides reasonable leverage.

They are still in one peice which now makes me worry about the brittleness of the plastic as they start to further age. It will be an end of an era when one of these breaks... Not that they are available anymore, but I love my mid 90s Pedros Milk Levers, made from recycled plastic milk bottles.I've never ever owned plastic tyre levers that haven't snapped. For this reason alone I would never buy them. The broad lever body means there’s no noticeable flex while working tight beads off the rim, and the double-sided spoke hook is easy to clip on. There’s even a hole in each lever so you can hang them up for easy access.

The first aspect to consider is the material. Although metal tyre levers will rarely snap (although we’ve known some cheaper ones to bend) we’d generally advise steering clear of this type of lever due to the risk of damage to the rims of your wheel – particularly in the case of carbon. Some of the best tyre levers incorporate metal into their design to ensure they’re strong enough to cope with extreme forces. The angled tip can cut into the bead slightly, making sliding the lever around the rim more difficult. These substitutes carry a risk. The sharp edges have a tendency to damage inner tubes or rim tape if you ride a tubeless setup. As far as possible that means recommending equipment that we have actually reviewed, but we also include products that are popular, highly-regarded benchmarks in their categories. But fitting them.......They should have fitting these with hands as part of the Worlds Strongest Man Contest. John has been writing about bikes and cycling for over 30 years since discovering that people were mug enough to pay him for it rather than expecting him to do an honest day's work. This model, though, do the job perfectly well. The tip has the right curvature and width to slide under the tyre and the lever itself is stiff enough to effectively pop the tyre up over the rim. Although quite cheap, they do this job better than both the Schwalbe and the SKS levers. The tyre lever, though seemingly one of the simplest and most basic of cycling tools, is one commonly used by almost every cyclist, and unfortunately, one often responsible for unnecessary frustration. Really, what is more fun than flatting far away from home, being thrilled you lugged that spare tube and pump, and then having your tire levers snap in two?
