About this deal

Seeing that the only way to stop a game was to catch the Snitch, the games sometimes went on for days – even months. The record for the longest Quidditch game is six months, and the snitch wasn’t caught. Rather, the captains of the teams agreed to end the game. Terence Higgs was portrayed by British actor Will Theakston, with the credits incorrectly stating he was played by Scot Fearn. Fearn's name was also misspelled as Fern.

It’s not Harry who first spots the Snitch. It’s actually announcer Lee Jordan who, in the middle of the action, proclaims for the audience and players to hear “wait a moment-was that the Snitch?” (SS 187) as a streak of gold flashes past Pucey’s head. This is a clear example of authorial intent defying logic. Rowling gave Gryffindor such a lopsided loss to highlight how integral Harry is to all aspects of the story. I just don’t think it aligns with the facts that were presented to the readers. A Snitch is not touched by bare skin before it is released, not even by the maker, who wears gloves. It carries an enchantment by which it can identify the first human to lay hands upon it, in the case of disputed capture. This Snitch will remember your touch, Potter. It occurs to me that Dumbledore, who had prodigious magical skill, whatever his other faults, might have enchanted this Snitch so that it will open only for you." — Rufus Scrimgeour correctly assumes what Dumbledore had done to this Snitch. [src] Excellent performance from Gryffindor overall. Harry was great too, but he honestly was Gryffindor’s weakest link in this match. Yes, he caught the Snitch, but due in large part to the Firebolt. Harry also never should never have let a scrub like Malfoy get the jump on him in the first place. Harry’s slow reaction nearly cost Gryffindor the Cup despite clearly being the superior team. 1995–96 Season Vs. Slytherin Match Summary Gold has such a strong presence in the wizarding world. Think of Quidditch, with its golden hoops and Golden Snitch — if ever there was a sport that captured Harry’s heart, this was it. It is the warm and inviting side of gold that inspires hope. It is also at the Quidditch World Cup where we first encounter leprechaun gold, and this fake gold sets the tone for the theme that dominates Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. After Harry cleared up his vision issues, he still had a window of time to catch the Snitch unabated before the Grim appears. It’s unclear how long this stretch of time is, but it’s enough where Harry could’ve reasonably spotted the Snitch. I know I’m splitting hairs here, but I think a truly great Seeker gets at least a glimpse of the Snitch in that period of time. Instead, Harry is understandably distracted by the Grim and lets Cedric get the jump on the Snitch. Harry still has a chance to beat Cedric to the Snitch before the Dementors appear, but we’ll never know for sure if he would have. Wand to my head, I honestly think Cedric still beats Harry to the Snitch if they both stay on their brooms. This just seems liked Cedric’s day. He’s physically stronger and more balanced in these conditions and I think he has every bit of Harry’s nerve. Cedric isn’t going to bail out even if there’s a possibility of crashing. Plus, Harry’s got to eat a little humble pie at some point and I think it would’ve happened here. But given what we’re presented with, this match rightly comes with an asterisk next to it. The worldwide popularity and playing of the game of Quidditch was closely monitored and analysed by the International Confederation of Wizards' Quidditch Committee. [1]

Like Adrian Pucey, he appeared to be one of the more decent Slytherin players, as he seemed to play by the rules of Quidditch and did not resort to cheating. [1] Magical abilities and skills [ ] British Quidditch fans kept up to date with the latest Quidditch news in the Daily Prophet and Seeker Weekly. [18] The Ancient Egyptians believed gold to be divine and indestructible. In modern folklore, it is the prized possession of every dragon. In its purest form, gold means truth and honesty, but also greed, control, shallow needs and extravagance. In Harry Potter, the theme of gold runs deep, right down to the wizarding currency, and the glimmer of a Golden Snitch. The 1269 game mentioned above was attended by Barberus Bragge, the Chief of the Wizards' Council. As a nod to the sport of Snidget-hunting, which was also popular at the time, Bragge brought such a bird to the game and released it from its cage. He told the players that one-hundred and fifty Galleons — a large sum of money, particularly in those times — would be awarded to the player who caught the bird. [1] From Gringotts bank to Rita Skeeter’s three golden teeth, the dark side of gold is sprinkled all over the wizarding world. When we first meet Dudley Dursley he is greedily tearing the wrapping paper off a gold watch while demanding more presents, and we instantly know the kind of person he is going to be.Not only is this a rather garish way to make your protagonist look good, it makes the rest of the game totally irrelevant. Who cares about the quaffle? Why even bother with goalies and beaters and all the other Seussian bits and bobbles that comprise a Quidditch match? Just have two seekers chase a Snitch around until one of them catches it and call it a day. That’s all Quidditch really is. The rest is window-dressing. Then there is Hogwarts. A place of learning and magic, of mysteries and taught mythologies, and the world where Harry transforms from orphan to hero. At the start we are introduced to its golden associations through plates and goblets, and the gold and scarlet colours of Gryffindor. It is also notable that gold is associated with the sharing of wisdom and knowledge — it’s a perfect colour for the place where witches and wizards learn their trade. Thereafter, it became customary to set frightened Snidgets loose during games. As a tribute to Bragge, 150 points were given to the team that caught the Snidget. This Snidget-catching craze naturally harmed the bird's population (as Snidgets are very fragile birds, and a simple human grip is enough to crush them to death), but the wizarding community was then unwilling to stop this barbaric activity and ceased to use Snidgets only when the bird was labelled as endangered. [1]

The Snitch actually contained the Resurrection Stone from the Peverell Ring, one of the Deathly Hallows, and Harry was only able to open the Snitch and use the Stone to summon dead spirits of his loved ones as he prepared to face Voldemort and die to protect his friends. [2] Porskoff Ploy: One Chaser flies upward, and then throws the Quaffle down to another Chaser directly below. Side Note: Pour some butterbeer out for Fred and George. This was their last ever match for Gryffindor. It’s also truly the end of an era. Angelina and Alicia graduate after this year and Harry never gets to play with the core group of players from his first three years again. Vs. Hufflepuff Match Summary When it comes to magical devices that can lead to a witch or wizard’s downfall, gold marks the spot. The Mirror of Erised is a great example — it is surrounded by gold lettering and it takes Dumbledore’s wisdom to guide Harry away from its tempting depths. And the golden statues of wizards and witches in the entrance hall to the Ministry of Magic are a testament to the hubris and vanity of the wizarding world. After placing the Golden Snitch to his mouth, Harry said, “ I am about to die,” and the Snitch opened. On the outside of the Golden Snitch, letters formed, and there was an inscription reading, “ I open at the close“. Dumbledore had successfully enchanted the Golden Snitch to house the Resurrection Stone.

There’s A Major Quidditch Foul Called The Snitchnip

No substitution of players is allowed throughout the game, even if a player is too injured or tired to continue to play. (Note: According to Goblet of Fire, during the Quidditch World Cup, at some point it lasted for days, and the players had to be switched out so that they could get some sleep). [1] In Harry Potterand the Deathly Hallows, Molly Weasley prepares a Golden Snitch shaped birthday cake for Harry’s seventeenth birthday. However, another significant appearance of the Snitch occurs in Harry Potterand the Deathly Hallowsagain, where Albus Dumbledore leaves Harry the first Golden Snitch that he caught with his mouth. It is later found out that the Resurrection Stone was hidden inside it, and since the Snitch has flesh memories, it would respond to only Harry’s touch. It finally opens, revealing the stone when Harry plans to sacrifice himself at the Forbidden Forest. One tale concerning the Snitch is that, during a match on Bodmin Moor in 1884, it managed to avoid capture for six months until both teams finally gave up in disgust at the performance of their Seekers. Cornish wizards and witches insist to this day that the Snitch is still wild in the area, which is possible due to its magical properties. [1]

Snitchnip: Any player other than Seeker touching or catching the Golden Snitch. (All players but Seeker)During the game, the Seeker on each team must search for the Golden Snitch . The first Seeker to catch the Golden Snitch is awarded one hundred and fifty points, which usually results in a victory, depending on the points of each team. A Quidditch game can only end when the Snitch has been caught by a Seeker. This is undeniably an impressive performance by Harry, especially in his first match. Even more impressive than catching the Snitch was the fortitude Harry showed in staying on the broom at all. At several points he’s dangling completely off the broom, holding on by just his hands. A lesser flyer would’ve most certainly have been on their way to St. Mungo’s before Hermione had time to disrupt the curse. J. K. Rowling first developed Quidditch after a fight with her boyfriend at the time in a small hotel in Manchester. Some of the game's elements, such as the Golden Snitch being worth a disproportionate amount of points, were due to her state of mind at the time, as she felt these elements would be frustrating to men. [20] There are some differences between how Quidditch is represented in Kennilworthy Whisp's Quidditch Through the Ages (and the books) and how it appears to be played in the films and video games. The history of the Snitch was perhaps the most interesting of all the Quidditch balls, and its introduction came as the direct result of a game played in 1269 in Kent. This was over a century on from Goodwin Kneen's letter to his cousin, and it seems that during this time, the game had acquired a great deal of popularity and organisation, and had altered in its format very little. It was, however, now routinely attended by large crowds of people who wanted to watch the game. [1]
