About this deal

My immediate thought was that I must have a leak somewhere caused by a frozen pipe over the winter. But I took particular care to drain the system of water using a Floe draindown attachment and also driving the vehicle around with the drain valves open for a while to release any dregs of fluid.

You can switch pumps on and off in one of two ways, both of which have increased and decreased in popularity over the years. It's not the switch that's pressure-sensitive, it's the pump. On EHU the pump will get about 13. 8volts, so you set the pressure on the switch accordingly. Off-grid, the pump will get 12. 7 volts which reduces as the battery gets used. Often, (always in my case) the reduction in voltage meant there wasn't enough energy for the pump to pressurise the switch and turn it off. So the switch needed adjusting every day as the battery voltage reduced. I am aware that many people don't have problems with the Whale switch but I couldn't make mine work without endless adjustment. In 1994 Trumaintroduced its first comb iboiler. It provided blown air heating and hot water from a single device but its size, weight and cost made it more suitable for motorhomes than touring caravans. Most of us are familiar with the submersible pumps that sit inside an external water container, such as an Aquaroll ( available at Halfords, Millets and Argos) and pump the water on board. They use a small 12-volt motor to drive an impellor at high speed, forcing the water through the delivery pipe and into the caravan. why should these be voltage sensitive? Very often, if off grid, they need regular adjustment as the voltage varies with the danger of burning out an expensive pump.As with the in-line pressure switch, it’s normal for there to be a slight delay in the pump switching on or off when you’re using the van’s hot-water system. instead of on the taps have a micro switch on a pressure device that controls the operation of the pump by sensing a drop in pressure when the taps turned on, Opened hot tap, turned control power on, Truma combi boiler panel on and set to 8amps in summer mode, switched on pump.

Most Ultrastore heaters have a water capacity of 10 litres, although a 14-litre version is available. Early models had an element of just 450 watts and took 70 minutes to heat up on electricity only. Over the years Truma upped the power in stages. It now comes with a switchable 850/1300 watt element, reducing the time to 29 minutes, or just 16 minutes if you use gas too.

5 things every caravanner should know if they’re towing this autumn

Most caravan pump systems will from time to time exhibit the effect you describe. This is not exceptional and does not represent a fault. In a caravan water system there is quite a lot of complaint material, the pipes are a relatively soft plastic with walls that have elastic characteristics, and where there is a storage water heater there is a necessary volume of air to allow for expansion of water as it heats. All the characteristics needed for the hammer effect. I'll take a more detailed look when I get home and maybe swap it out with the new pump. If that resolves the problem then I'll see if it's possible to disassemble it and fix it and it can become my spare pump.
