About this deal

Enterprise models have higher PoE budgets, faster interfaces such as 2.5 Gbps RJ45 Ethernet, and the features available in the Pro models

The main way to differentiate UniFi switches is that the 1st generation model names begin with "US-" and the 2nd generation model names begin with "USW-". See UniFi Switches Comparison and Buyers Guide to compare all available models. New Desktop/Small SwitchesEdgeRouters have been around a long time, and are still technically supported with hotfixes and occasional software updates. The newer UISP hardware line is the safer bet for long term support, although EdgeRouters still have a lot of feature advantages. The UDM and UniFi OS Consoles in general were a big change in the UniFi line. Before, it was easy to run the UniFi Network application anywhere, and add any devices you wanted. With the UDM, you’re forced to use the built-in Network application, meaning you can’t add a UDM to a Cloud Key or self-hosted UniFi Network controller. Due to its unusually long time in beta, many people assumed the company had abandoned the project, instead focusing on its Dream Machine line of devices, with the UDM Pro, UDM, UDM-SE and the upcoming UDR.

One other note on terminology: you may see “UniFi controller” used. This is a generic term for a device that runs the UniFi Network application. That software configures and monitor UniFi networks. Over the years, Ubiquiti have changed their naming conventions. Currently, the UXG-Lite and UXG-Pro are “ UniFi Gateways” while the UDR, UDM-Pro, UDM-SE, and UDW are “ UniFi Cloud Gateways”. Previously, the UXG-Pro was “Routing Offload”, and the Cloud Gateways were “UniFi OS Consoles” or “Gateway Consoles”. This limitation also affects the USG Pro too, limiting it to 250mbps. This is where the UDM line differs from the USG line, thanks to much more powerful internals the UDM Pro for example can handle 1Gbps traffic with DPI and IDS or IPS activated. Ubiquiti still sells almost all of the 1st generation models of UniFi switches. They are older, but they can be better options for some networks. Unlike with the USG/USG-Pro, the 1st generation switches come without major performance limitations. Older Desktop/Small SwitchesNormally, behind the scenes, the controller edits the configuration file for you. That only works with the features that Ubiquiti officially supports. If you’ve ever had to deploy a UniFi network, you know there are a many features not in the GUI. Unfortunately there is nothing similar with the UniFi OS, and you are limited to what Ubiquiti shows in the controller. With DPI on, gigabit performance is possible. With IPS/IDS, throughput drops to 85 Mbps. When being used as a VPN endpoint, throughput is limited to 40 Mbps. See note on hardware offloading below.

One potential problem with the UXG-Pro is the current state of the UDM-Pro and UniFi OS. Some features on the UDM-Pro are not working, incomplete, buggy, or just missing. Development for the Dream Machines has been steady, but after 9 months, the UXG is still on on beta firmware version 0.5.0. EdgeRouters expose more networking features in their web interface, and can be configured through a command line. EdgeRouters are more traditional networking equipment, where UniFi is “software defined” and managed by the UniFi Network application. Outside of a few setup wizards, the EdgeRouter and EdgeSwitch products don’t hold your hand, and they expect you to be able to configure things manually. This article will guide you through the process of adopting your UniFi UXG-Pro to a UniFi Network Controller

SFP / SFP+ to RJ45 Adapter (10G)

Now, finally, USG owners have some new hardware they can buy. That is, if they haven’t upgraded to a Dream Machine, UXG-Pro, or found another vendor.
