The writing is overly descriptive and needs solid editing. There are several paragraphs of Harry driving and admiring countryside!!! Jeez! One sentence would do. It’s a police procedural, not XIX realistic novel! Language, sentence openers, syntax is very repetitive and I had a feeling like all the description only served as a filler. He had been wounded by IED while he was in the Parachute Regiment and this gives him an intimidating and severe look. When he arrives at his new work station, he despairs as it is a sleepy outpost with sleepy villages, lots of sheep, and rolling hills that he does not believe could conjure up a major investigation. In the village, almost everyone knows everyone and the biggest crimes reported to local law enforcement are sheep stealing. Wensleydale does not even have a police station and he learns that he will be based at a small room in the community centre. But then his first day gets very interesting when a girl on her way to school goes missing. This results in an interesting chain of events with twists and trunks that are enough to make one dizzy. At first, his secondment to the bucolic countryside populated by farmers and tourists seems like the perfect place to go stir crazy, but then a teen goes missing, and soon enough there's a body by a lake and despite his new Superindendent's admonishments to not disrupt the idyl of the dales, as if his IED scarred face wasn't enough to do the job proper like, Harry just has to roll up his sleeves and do the job. DCI Harry Grimm tends to drive his superintendent with the Bristol police a bit crazy. He knows his stuff, her gets results, but a lot of people seemed to get beaten up in the process. Another thing that I liked about the book was the author's description of the Yorkshire Dales, a beautiful place. However, there were definitely elements that weren't quite as well polished and enjoyable for me and these outweighed the good. The readers of Grimm Up North will learn about Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy and how it affects everyone involved. Also, the readers of Grimm Up North will understand the problems that law enforcement officers have when they feel guilty about family tragedy and how it affects their working life. I have to say I was becoming increasingly fond of Harry and Jim who seems to have become Harry's right hand man over a very short time. The settings are beautifully described by the author, visualisation taking its place in your head even to speeding down winding steep narrow roads, and that feeling of the need to hold on tight and close your eyes as your heart rate rises rapidly to the sound of screeching tyres.
