Chapter 2: Giants in Play: This chapter is intended for Dungeon Masters and features a section on how to roleplay giant NPCs, a description of the hierarchy of giants (known as the Ordning), as well as their various gods, social structures and organizations. In August 2022, Wizards of the Coast held their annual Wizards Presents event. During that time Wizard unveiled a number of upcoming Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition books, with the first book being the heist-themed adventure anthology Keys to the Golden Vault, followed by the player-focused supplement The Book of Many Things, the updated and expanded Phandelver and Below: The Shattered Obelisk, and Planescape: Adventures in the Multiverse . Bigby the Great recounts his journeys into the history, myth, and society of giants in this guide to their realms in the worlds of Dungeons & Dragons. Here Bigby and the demigod Diancastra, child of the giants’ All-Father, Annam, unveil the secrets of Annam’s mighty descendants. Because the damage is “extra damage”, it is multiplied on a critical hit. It can be very tempting to reserve Strike of the Giants for crits, but usually it’s more impactful to use it for the rider effect. The “enclaves” are short, easily digestible adventures that will be easy to slot into campaigns, especially when combined with the encounter tables in the previous chapter.

I personally would have rather seen a couple choice items with a fully built-out rune system, similar to the tattoos in Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything, to present a more unique offering. But, you can easily poach the “Invoking” mechanic and transfer it to other items to jumpstart your venture into enhancing weapons with runes. The lore is fantastic and the book does a great job of presenting giants as more than just mindless monsters

No new spells or races and only one subclass make this book a less sizeable offering of player options than Fizban’s. Explore the wondrous realms of giants with this supplement for the world’s greatest roleplaying game.

Overall, I like these feats okay. If they had been out when I first created my Rune Knight, I might have considered building around Strike of the Giants and one of the follow-on feats. The DM would let me rebuild, I’m just not sure how much I want to – I’m already a fire genasi Rune Knight, that’s a lot of elemental theme going on. Chapter 2: Giants in Play

The only issue I see with most of this information is giants will have to be a huge part of your campaign for you to start worrying about how many giants live together in a settlement versus a steading. While giant foundlings are said to grow abnormally large for their species, this isn’t reflected in a change to your creature size. When you take the Strike of the Giants feat, it represents your gained ability to channel an echo of the magic that imbues the various types of giants into your strikes. They can also expand your pool of spells known, which can be helpful for classes like the Bard and the Sorcerer, who get a strictly limited number of spells known. You might weigh that benefit against spellcasting feats like Fey Touched, but remember that Runeshaper is expected to be in line with Skilled or Tough, which aren’t stunning powerful feats.
