Universal Pictures has announced that Downton Abbey: A New Era will be available on digital June 24th with physical releases coming July 5th. The initial film followed a Royal Visit to the Crawley family and Downton staff from the King and Queen of England and ended with a ball fitting for the Royal Family.

I initially had some reservations based solely on the subject matter and genre as it just sounded like it would be a slow melodrama set in a location/period specific setting that might be difficult to connect with.Several shots of Highclere Castle, which stands in for Downton Abbey, are interspersed with interiors. The film has a multitude of sequences containing streaming/cascading light, and mixed light dark elements, that simply look terrific. What might have happened had he become a journalistic and political force in his own right who actually challenged his adoptive family, all while still loving them?

The first act was a bit rough and we didn't think we would end up liking the film, but as things got moving we really started to enjoy it and yes, it did have an emotional, but fitting, ending (or new beginning). While predictable (as you point out in your review), it was still a fun ride to revisit the large cast of characters one last time (or is it? Upon arrival, a snooty leading lady and a very comfortable leading man make themselves a fixture at the Abbey. In listening to the Dolby Atmos surround mix I found it to be of the less aggressive variety, but, considering the source material that’s not a complete surprise. With the purchase of DOWNTON ABBEY: A NEW ERA on disc or digital, fans are eligible to earn points towards digital movies via the Universal All-Access Rewards program. When Downton Abbey: The Motion Picture was announced I was all in and eagerly its theatrical release.
