About this deal
A great cast of characters and some pretty gritty themes feature throughout the book: institutional racism, coercion, OCD, anxiety, guilt/obligation, privilege, abuse, how vulnerable people can slip between the cracks of society.I’d recommend any Dorothy Koomson book I’ve ever read, they’re a different kind of thriller, her books are bought to life by the families she creates. Shortly after Jude disappears and Nell’s life is turned upside down by the police who are trying to pin Jude’s disappearance and the death of the mermaids on him. As the timeline from 1993 progresses Pope’s focus gradually turns to Nell and his continued refusal to accept her father’s innocence with his son, Aaron, still doing his bidding further down the line.
Every time I breathed I realised that the woman with the Brighton Mermaid tattoo wasn't going to do that ever again.
It was interesting to see the impact of racism as well as assumptions made about young women/girls by those who should be above drawing conclusions based on such flimsy evidence and how these assumptions have lasting consequences.
