About this deal

Jenny has managed to recover from the traumatic childhood she had and grow up and become a vet in a sleepy village in Devon. Where she lives with her husband Mark and their two children. Jenny hasn’t told her husband who her father is. She is the daughter of Paul Slater better known as the The Painted lady Killer. This book centers around Jenny and her husband Mark. Jenny’s father was a serial killer and turned her childhood upside down. When a woman ends up missing with a similar pattern to her fathers murders, Jenny can’t remember anything from that night, does murder run in your blood? Did Jenny do this? Is she being framed for a copy cat murder? This is my second read by Alice Hunter and I loved it (just not as much as The Serial Killers Wife) but nonetheless, it was a fabulous read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Just like The Serial Killer's wife I had difficulty doing anything other than reading this book once I had started it!

I will say though- this read started a bit slowly with a large build-up. Not necessarily a bad thing, but it resulted in me piecing together the plot twist a little more than halfway through. I wasn’t aware as to how it would play out though so it’s safe to say I was still hooked to the read. When a young woman goes missing from the village suspicion starts to fall on her. Can she prove she is innocent or will her past put an end to that. In addition to the increasingly tense situation is that a local woman, Olivia Edwards is missing and Jenny believes Mark once had an affair with her.You all right in there, love? You’ve been ages.’ It’s Mark. Obviously. Who else would it be? Images flit through my mind’s eye, like beetles scuttling to hide, but I can’t grasp hold of any that make sense.

This read focuses a lot on the human mind. Insecurities, indecisiveness, doubt, fear, betrayal- they’re all emotions portrayed amazingly. Even love. I liked that this read revolved around a person balancing work, family, parenting AND her social life. And to add onto that, enough family trauma to fill an ocean. Scroll down for more!

However, despite a number of very positive aspects to the story it feels inconsistent. For instance, the tension rises and then drops and little momentum is achieved in my opinion. There’s not a lot of pace, the story seems flat and an exciting when it’s ought to be a jaw dropper and sadly it doesn’t achieve that response in me. This is partly due to points being over explained and we divert to things that don’t add a great deal to the storytelling. It’s repetitive in places too. I cannot believe I have not read this author’s work before now. I love how she keeps you unsure, never knowing where this story is going to go. I could not get enough of this book. The characters are brilliant and you are given enough scenic details to transport you into the character’s world. I raced through this book and loved every second. It was a fabulous read. I cannot wait to dig into The Serial Killer’s Wife…. Morning, Jen – thank God. I was beginning to worry.’ Hayley scoots her chair out from the reception desk and stands, reaching over the counter to pass me a piece of paper. ‘These are the early morning animals in for surgery. Nisha has done the preliminaries; Vanessa is organising the operating room and I’ve booked them in.’ Her voice is clipped. Sometimes, one might think that they had parents who were not the best, but imagine Jane Slater! She had the misfortune of having a father who was a serial killer and a mother who was a control freak. Breaking away from them wasn't easy but then dad, The Painted Lady Killer known for his penchant for placing these butterflies onto his victims, is sent to prison where he is to this day.

I really enjoyed The Serial Killers wife, so I was so grateful to receive a copy of the next in the series The Serial Killers daughter. The Serial Killer’s Wife has been sitting on my TBR for a few months already, but I have not yet read it. I skipped straight to The Serial Killer’s Daughter. WOW! What a fabulous read. When you reach for this book, you are in for a treat. This is a remarkably gripping read that asks if a desire for killing can be inherited. This hair-raising tale will keep you hooked from start to finish with twists and turns that leaves you guessing all the time. Thanks, Abi. They do look good.’ I reach in and remove the cream-filled chocolate choux bun and take a bite. ‘Oh. My. God,’ I say between mouthfuls. ‘Haven’t had one of these since I was a kid. My mother used to—’ I break off.

Cream cakes from Kelly’s – couldn’t resist. Sorry, it’s why I was late – had to wait for her to open up, then she took a while to serve me. Thought it’d be worth it?’ Abi gives me an apprehensive look as she stretches out her arm, offering me the open box. Does she think I’ll chastise her? I hope I’m not that kind of boss. I smile, keen to make up for my earlier omission, too. My gaze catches on the skin of Abi’s arm as her long-sleeved polo shirt rides up, revealing a succession of raised white lines that run horizontally along the inner forearm. Echoes of trauma, I think with concern, and I avert my eyes. I look at the closed door, half afraid of what I’m going to be faced with when she opens it. Then the squealing noises from downstairs remind me that I must hurry the morning routine along. I leave the bedroom and head to the kitchen, relieved at the excuse to put off confronting the reason Jen is avoiding me. Chapter 3 JENNY

I loved the storyline. It captured the mind of a criminal, dark thoughts and doubts amazingly. It made so much sense when I read that the author has a psychology degree and worked with prisoners. For Jane breaking away meant changing everything, especially er name which then became Jennifer. She went to veterinarian school and became a vet, married Mark and had two children far away from the clutches of her mother, Claire. Life seemed to have allowed her a measure of comfort but then she learns her husband had an affair with Olivia, a woman in their neighborhood. The book was a beauty. I just LOVED it. It was written in alternate chapters between Jenny and Mark, so almost felt like a conversation as opposed to a book. Several twists and questions arose throughout leaving me, not ready for the end. I’ll admit, I didn’t see that coming. When I first saw the title, thought it was a sequel to the first book by this author, The Serial Killer’s Wife. It is not. This is another twisty tale of a family and how the evil of one affects all the lives around them. While I guessed who the killer was, still found this to be an enjoyable read and would recommend to fans of this genre! Lying with my head turned away from the light filtering through the curtains, I attempt to retrace my steps. Jen was in bed when I came up last night, having gone up before me while I drained the last drops of wine watching a repeat episode of Breaking Bad. I kissed her goodnight, placed my phone on the table and went to sleep as soon as my head hit the pillow. I didn’t even go on my phone, and I certainly have no recollection of switching the alarm off. I frown and swipe the alarm notification across again to make sure it goes off tomorrow, and get up again. Jen has been in the bathroom far longer than usual. Too late, I realise I should’ve corrected her, praised her instead of letting her think she’d done a bad job, but my mind is not quite here. I need to make sure it is, though, because in twenty minutes I’m going to be operating on our first animal with Samir and Vanessa. The characters are interesting and each twist, as they develop, brings out more reasons to keep reading to find out exactly where this ride will lead. As with the first book, I really didn't see the ending coming until it started to unravel and even then, there was a surprise included! I sometimes struggle with thrillers as I’ve read that many I’m quite hard to please with them, but this didn’t disappoint. It just included everything I love about a thriller and I can 100% recommend!
