The gang incorporates a witch who can summon her tattooed demons into the field of battle, a legendary immortal rabbit-eared warrior and a shapeshifter who can turn into a bear. KoTW itself had many musical references and was influenced by the music and bands of the 1970’s and with Bloody Rose, it is influenced by the music and bands of the 1980’s. These references, combined with the book’s brilliant sense of humor and genuine pathos of its characters’ plights, felt carefully cultivated and richly rewarding. Mercenary bands have taken to fighting monsters in arenas for money rather than adventure into the Heartwyld to obtain a bounty. Nevertheless, worth mentioning are the explorations of discrimination in Bloody Rose—“evil thrives on division,” which is profoundly relevant for today’s fucked up world, and the discussion of stories and their origin, which is one of the most grimdark (perhaps deliberately) aspects of the novel: “You didn’t get to be the villain of one story, she supposed, unless you were the hero of another.One thing I particularly enjoyed about this novel was that the characters might have been very famous, very formidable warriors, but they were just as fallible, just as broken as ordinary people.
