About this deal

Lindemans varieties include Lambic Framboise (raspberry), Kriek (sour cherry), Pêcheresse (peach), Cassis ( blackcurrant), Pomme ( apple), and Strawberry. Years later, I looked through the Hop Culture beer collection and realized we had a handful of Krieks collecting dust. Peter Breugel pictured happy peasants dancing and drinking Kriek – lambic with cherries – in the 17th century. After testing out the waters with Lindemans’ Kriek, I’d recommend seeking out this farmhouse version.

The perfect balance between its sourness and the sweetness of the cherries makes this a refreshing aperitif. After sampling my way through De Ranke, Cantillon, and Drie Fonteinen, I was offered a Lindemans Oude Kriek Cuvée René. Our meeting with American importer Charles Finkel in the 1970s revolutionized the fruit beer segment. Lindemans have been brewing this beer since 1979 and it has won various beer awards during this time.A Ghost Is Born didn’t have the savory qualities or density that most Krieks carry, though it still had a wonderful tartness and balanced sweetness that managed to stay refreshing. Mostly clear but a bit chill hazed, this otherwise appears light ruby red with a fairly tall pink foam head that clings in tall ridges.

Chêne Cerise captures the savory, aggressive flavors of a classic kriek but balances it out with a soft tartness. If you think you know what beer tastes like, try Lindemans Kriek and prepare to have your world turned upside down. The serious practitioners are all blessedly making the best beer they can with the best fresh, local fruit they can, rather than forcing stylistic uniformity.Due to the use of filtrate and pasteurisation, this kriek is sweeter and fruitier than Old Kriek Cuvée René, which undergoes a second fermentation process in the bottle. To prevent that from happening, we therefore developed an alternative production method for our kriek. T: cherry pie filling up front with a blast of tart, tangy acidity in the finish, which continues to tingle in the aftertaste while a subtly sweetish cherry cordial smatters the palate floor. O: despite its childish presentation of cherry flavor, this marriage of kriek and lambic is undeniably a match made in heaven. For this beer, cherries are then added to give the beer a pleasant and full fruity sweetness that offsets the sour base before a pleasing and refreshing tart finish.
