About this deal

Where The World Turns Wild is brimming with love and affection for the natural world around us, and is a joy to read. When scientists discover that the siblings provide the key to fighting the disease, the pair must flee for their lives. Read during the aftermath of a pandemic and lockdown, the opening really struck a chord, ‘a disease so complex , so shifting’. I also particularly love Ghost, not to give anything away but Ghost plays a key role in Juniper and Bears journey.

The relationship between Juniper and Bear is wonderfully captured, and Juniper is fiercely protective of her little brother. Fake news, scaremongering, climate change, science vs ethics, are all huge disussions in society, and somehow this book makes them so accessible to young people. This is a heart pounding adventure for the pair with danger, struggles and learning to fend for themselves in a wild forest. I was at my last school for 4 years and we had ********* book fairs every term – and every term, I was disappointed by the narrow range of books. This book is a true classic of the future and I would recommend it to both adults and children, as a story to enjoy with the taste of what could happen to our world if we don't appreciate what we have around us. Juniper lives in a world where, fifty years before, a group took the fate of the world into their own hands, and the only humans to survive are the ones who live in enclosed spaces with barely any contact with nature. I’ve raced through Where the World Turns Wild… I think it truly is a fabulous debut with a powerful ecological message that could not be more timely. Cities were secured and any form of nature was banished, with buffer zones separating the tower blocks from the trees and most importantly, the ticks. Find out about the latest book in the 'Girl, Missing' series, Secret Sister, in this short video by author Sophie McKenzie.

While most people seem content to live in such a cage, she and her little brother, Bear, have always known about their resistance to the disease and dream of escaping into the wild. Somehow, the pair must escape their confine, with smuggled provisions, and survive the insurmountable odds of a 300 mile journey to Ennerdale. This alone would have been enough to catch my interest, but it's also about rewilding, a passion of mine. Where The World Turns Wild is a wonderful book which, whilst filled with tension from the opening pages, allows the reader to travel with Juniper and Bear as they try to escape the confines of the city.It may be proving a controversial choice amongst teachers at this sensitive time but it will be a winner with children now and in the future, of that I have no doubt. The survivors hole up in tightly-controlled cities where they are safe from the ticks that carry the disease and Mother Nature slowly begins to recover from the effects of human overpopulation and resource exploitation.

This thrilling debut is perfect for children aged 9+ and is a beautiful, exciting adventure story with an ecological warning which delivers a passionate rallying cry to protect our precious wildlife. Once upon a time, almost fifty years ago, climate change and deforestation and humans ransacking everything good and beautiful, had driven our planet to breaking point. They simply couldn’t imagine the damage, or the parts of the world that were being damaged, sufficiently to care. At the centre is the conundrum of the Rewilders killing huge numbers of people to protect the Earth and this allows for the reader to consider what people are doing to this world and why it needs to change. The story follows two children who leave a protected, walled city to venture through the wild world beyond on a brave adventure.

Nicola Penfold has created a world in which people are forced to live within city walls and without any nature growing around them. This makes them a target for the authorities, who want answers and makes them different to the other children. As a reader I wanted them to be safe, but I also wanted them to survive in the wild, because the thought of them going back to that city was terrible.

Author Guy Bass introduces SCRAP, about one robot who tried to protect the humans on his planet against an army of robots. Blog Tour Review - Pax and the Missing Head by David Barker In a country beset by civil war, New London defends itself behind a giant wall.Your selection was perfect for our children and what really made the difference was your ability to engage with each child, discuss their interests and help them to choose a suitable book based on your extensive knowledge of the books you were selling. Wondrous, warm-hearted, wildly exhilarating […] The world is familiar and frightening, the relationships between characters beautifully rendered – Nicola Penfold is an author to watch. When Juniper and Bear’s difference becomes a matter of life and death, their grandmother prepares them for escape. The book tells the journey of Juniper and Bear as they escape the caged city to be reunited with with their parents and their home in the wild.
