But even back then I loved historical fiction, as my friend well knew, and thick books had never put me off either.

I'm perplexed as to why this series, and this book in particular, are compared to Diana Gabaldon's Outlander. Poison for this reader because I was not entertained enough to ignore the mechanics and focus on the story.

With Ben Savard’s guidance, allies are drawn from every segment of New Orleans’s population and from Andrew Jackson’s army, now pouring into the city in preparation for what will be the last major battle of the War of 1812. Nathaniel is the only thoroughly admirable white male in the huge cast--upbringing having triumphed over blood--and no person of color has flaws. Yet as Hannah resumes her duties as a gifted healer among the sick and needy, she finds that she is also slowly healing herself. People were sometimes very insistent on that, and I know that Diana was sometimes irritated by the whole debate.The cast of characters is manageably ample: not too many that you lose track of them, and some of them are well fleshed-out, on both sides. I don’t necessarily regret reading it, I just don’t know if I am thrilled that I spent so long reading it to finish feeling so unfinished. One day the subject of the Battle of Saratoga came up and Diana mentioned that she had used the battle as a setting for a scene, and this happened just as I was writing a similar scene.
