About this deal

The Hero: Eddie Rochester, a recent widower who's handsome and sexy. Someone who makes the heroine feel safe and wanted. Yet as Jane and Eddie fall for each other, Jane is increasingly haunted by the legend of Bea, an ambitious beauty with a rags-to-riches origin story, who launched a wildly successful southern lifestyle brand. How can she, plain Jane, ever measure up? And can she win Eddie’s heart before her past––or his––catches up to her? The gothic atmosphere of the book reminds you of Rebecca and Bea and Eddie’s dysfunctional relationship reminds you of not so naive Guinevere and Joe Goldberg who spends more time at gym (funny thing is Eddie also loves the books as it is mentioned in the first chapters!) Meet Jane. Newly arrived to Birmingham, Alabama, Jane is a broke dog-walker in Thornfield Estates––a gated community full of McMansions, shiny SUVs, and bored housewives. The kind of place where no one will notice if Jane lifts the discarded tchotchkes and jewelry off the side tables of her well-heeled clients. Where no one will think to ask if Jane is her real name.

For Jane, Eddie is an opportunity – an opportunity for both unimaginable wealth and protection from her past.Special thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for sharing this remarkable arc with me in exchange my honest opinions. After the detective leaves, Eddie tells Jane that they were just giving him an update on the situation. They found Blanche’s body, but not Bea’s. They also suspect that this was a murder, not an accident. Eddie says that he’s not a suspect, but they still want to question him. He also says they want to question Jane, too, which worries her since she has very purposefully been keeping her past hidden.

and speaking of that attic, i get the justification for why there’s a bed in the panic room (wakka chikka wakka chikka), but there’s a shower in the panic room, too? there’s such a big deal made of bea thumping the bed on the floor to try to get jane’s attention, but would no one hear the pipes and water? Later that night, the police show up. The woman introduces herself as Detective Laurent. Jane initially assumes that she’s there for her, but it turns out she wants to question Eddie about Bea. Part IV: Bea But, can this unlikely romance last, and can Jane really transition from their dogwalker, to "one of the girls" ? I was completely blown away by The Wife Upstairs. This is a compulsive, irresistible retelling of Jane Eyre with a modern, noir twist – and wow, does it work’ Samantha Downing, bestselling author of My Lovely WifeWhether you have read Jane Eyre of not, this book will not disappoint. The Wife Upstairs is captivating, well thought out, and entertaining. Now, if you are a reader that hates when Classics are reimagined, and you are familiar with Jane Eyre-then this book won't be for you. And who had the audacity call this Southern gothic? Those are fighting words in my world because Southern Gothic is probably my favorite genre and I do believe William Faulkner and Flannery O'Connor would roll over in their graves. I can't tell you not to read this, and I can't assure you won't feel as strongly as I did, but I can assure you this is NOT Southern Gothic.

In terms of the less successful components, I’d say this really isn’t a Southern Gothic novel. Instead, it’s a mystery-thriller, based on Jane Eyre that happens to be set in Alabama. It just didn’t capture that gothic spirit for me. When I think of gothic novels, it evokes in me an image of a sort of breathlessness, taught tension, latent eroticism, simmering passion, cryptic characters, billowing curtains and lurking fears. That’s not this book. Instead, I’d say that tone-wise it reads very much like a standard thriller.Unlikable characters: I admit, I like at least one likeable character in my stories. Told from three perspectives (Jane, Bea, and Eddie), The Wife Upstairs doesn’t have one likable character. From what I remember of Jane Eyre, she was somewhat likable. I think the author does a good job in developing complex characters with good and bad sides. I could understand Jane’s and Eddie’s motivations for their actions, but I could not understand Bea and my feelings about her changed significantly from the beginning to the end of the story. You will like this if you love unlikable characters! Eddie can give Jane everything she's always wanted: stability, acceptance, and a picture-perfect life. A tasty, if not always tasteful, tale of supernatural mayhem that fans of King and Crichton alike will enjoy.

What happens next is nothing short of brilliant, twisted and completely wild. Talk about turning the freaking tables and stunning this reader to no end!

A feisty Southern charmer that’s twisty enough to make dinners late in kitchens everywhere...a modern, rip-roaring thriller best enjoyed on a sandy beach with a tall, salty-rimmed beverage nearby." –– Atlanta Journal-Constitution I’ve always loved Jane Eyre and love Wide Sargasso Sea too. So when I was offered to the opportunity to read and review The Wife Upstairs, a modern interpretation of the classic story which is published today in digital format, I jumped at the chance. First thing I haven't read Jane Eyre yet and earlier I thought it would be a good sign because this way I wouldn't know the direction in which the story is going but now after reading it , ik I don't have to read Jane Eyre .
