About this deal

A quick swot up on the basics of humidity will help you make the best choice for your application when it comes to purchasing a unit. If you need drying in a cold environment, temporarily heated space or already pretty dry environment they this is what you’ll need. Dehumidification with membranes can allow for water vapor removal without condensation; this avoids the energy required with the enthalpy of vaporization, offering high efficiency for well-designed systems. Because of the volume of airflow through the appliance, dust buildup needs to be removed so it does not impede airflow; many designs feature removable and washable air filters. Dehumidifiers with hot gas defrost are great all rounders suitable for most applications (especially here in the UK) where seasonal or even daily temperature fluctuations are a consideration, as you can get the most out of them across a wider temperature range than air defrost systems.

In contrast to electrical dehumidifiers, the chemical variant uses a white granulate which withdraws the moisture from the air. Desiccant dehumidifiers can also operate at lower temperatures than compressor dehumidifiers as the unit does not rely on cooled coils for which the moisture condensing efficiency decreases at lower temperatures. Refrigerated dehumidifiers come in all shapes and sizes ranging from small, plastic units found in homes all the way up to large swimming pool dedicated types. Although there is a higher investment at the beginning with electrical dehumidifiers compared to chemical dehumidifiers, they are significantly more cost-effective and have a longer operational life. In day to day life it’s the RH level that causes most issues and often the first we know about it is the signature musty smell, a damp patch or speckled mould on a wall. For example, if you have a room with an RH level of 50% then the air within it has half the amount of vapor it could hold at whatever temperature it is.

Vapor-selective active membrane energy exchanger with mechanical ventilation and indoor air recirculation". With dehumidification you use the amount of water that is actually dissolved in the air and compare it to the maximum amount of vapor it could absorb at whatever temperature the room is, thus giving you the Relative Humidity, or RH level as it is more commonly known. Now, if you’re looking to extract moisture form the air within an environment with a less stable ambient, where the temperature has big swings and can fluctuate between, say, 5°C-35°C then it might be wise to opt for a refrigerated unit.Defrosting using a hot gas mechanism is much faster and more effective than air circulation at lower temperatures so when you’ve got an application with an ambient below 15°C then this is the system to go for. Although a powerful refrigerant unit will be effective down to 12°C, if the average ambient of your environment falls below circa 8°C then performance will start to tail off and the defrost mechanism might not be enough to cope with the ice build up. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. In large rooms, the humidity should be approximately 50% for health reasons, and when it runs over to 65% it can already promote mould. For example a single pot plant can add 150ml of moisture over an average 24hr period, which is already beyond the extraction capabilities of Peltier devices.

Note: Passyfier Vents are used as an aid to help control humidity and are NOT to be used as a method of providing ventilation to any gas, oil, or solid fuel appliance.

For ventilation in smaller areas such as cupboards, wardrobes or box rooms, see the Passyfier 75AB Sleeved Vent. Since the saturation vapor pressure of water decreases with decreasing temperature, the water in the air condenses on the surface, separating the water from the air. For example, our desiccant models take 2-4 hours to dry an 8kg load of laundry whereas a compressor model will likely take 4-6 hours to dry the same load. Because window air conditioner units have condensers and expansion units, some of them can be used as makeshift dehumidifiers by sending their heat exhaust back into the same room as the cooled air, instead of the outside environment.

Whilst for those who want it all, the DD8L Zambezi is our top of the range desiccant dehumidifier with 6 world firsts and a range of control options. The performance might be as good as the desiccant but this might be a possible alternative if desiccants are a bit more than you’d like to pay. Liquid Desiccant Air Conditioning Using Single Storage Solution Tank, Evaporative Cooling, and Marquise-Shaped Solar Collector".Oh, and lets not forget they don’t exactly contain the most environmentally friendly substance and would have to be disposed of after being used. If however the application you’re looking at stays between 15-35°C then an air defrost system might be a viable alternative. This liquid absorbing layer allows them to behave like selective membranes, without having a solid selective materials or very small pores. Oxygen is released from the dehumidifying side, and if a large amount of water has been introduced to an airtight enclosure then oxygen can build up inside the enclosure. If the dehumidifier is operating at an ambient below about 15°C the moisture forming on the evaporator will freeze as it condenses, then as the ice builds up it reduces the effectiveness of the unit.
