Its boss battles leave quite a bit to be desired, and the level design may be a bit too narrow at points, but Soulstice manages to make up for these shortcomings with an emotional story and a unique brand of observation-based gameplay that ensures its status as a confident addition to the genre. Combined with its excellent art style and fun, grim setting, I went in incredibly excited for this title. Lute brings a whole other element to the battles however and they must all be juggled if you want to survive. Some are great, a lot of them are good, but there are some that are just bad that it hampers your platforming since you can’t tell if you’re actually over a platform or slightly off to the side.

Hell, you can even turn on an option for Lute to auto-defend, which I did turn on for the last few chapters to alleviate the tedium.If Briar is low on health when you activate Rapture, she will instead go Berserk and you’ll have to do a quick minigame so Lute can bring Briar back before she dies.

The balance of the Holy Kingdom of Keidas is compromised when powerful, feral creatures known as “Wraiths” invade from the other side of the Veil, threatening to consume the living. Even Briar and Lute, who constantly are attempting to avoid succumbing to corruption and transforming into monsters themselves, look super cool when they occasionally lose that battle.
