About this deal

It’s played over 6 rounds where players take one action at a time in turns until all 4 ships have sailed to a site.

What begins is a quietly furious jostling for position on the boats as you second-guess your opponents’ desired locations. Naturally, in the wrong hands, everything can be overcomplicated, but within the scope of this game it flows very well, in my experience. This list has wallet-sized and wallet-friendly games; games for the first timer and for friends who have been playing for years. The great thing is, you’re actually building these structures using the chunky wooden blocks that come with the game, so by the time you’ve finished the playing area will be full of slightly unwieldy monuments. In each turn, you must weigh your options for getting your own stones into place and thwarting your opponents’ placement plans. If you’ve got nice players, it’s not bad either way, but the game can get a bit intense, so just make sure you know what you’re getting into.

It is fairly easy for a player to start collecting statue cards from the market and these cards can score big at the end of the game. It’s not exactly a description that leaps off the page but, you know what, this is a really strategic game. Imhotep is a game played over six rounds where each player takes one action to quarry stone, load a stone, deliver a stone or play a card. Each round there are plenty of decisions and, although it gets a little repetitive, Imhotep undoubtedly offers plenty of player interaction and tactical choices. When a ship arrives at the market a player can choose to take a face-up card as normal or can take the two face-down cards, choose one to keep and discard the other.

Currently, given that I’m writing about them on top of another game’s review, I’m doing a real bad job of being patient, but that’s just how things work in Busytown. In Imhotep, players take on the roles of Nefertiti and Akhenaten, one of ancient Egypt's most famous royal couples. Starting with the figure closest to the boat, take the token furthest from the board (at the end of the boat) and give it to the player who owns that figure. I thought it was a deceptively simple, but quintessential Eurogame that had lots of paths to win that balances short term AND long term planning in a very easy-to-grasp, visual way. Imhotep: The Duel shares some parallels with its parent game (also by designer Phil Walker-Harding), but has some neat additions, too.

Imhotep gives you a chance to cover yourself in greatness by building monuments that will stand for ages.If you don’t have enough empty slots to place all three stones, you may place however many you can, but any extra stones must remain in your quarry.

With a diverse lineup of 100+ products spanning stem toys and kits, tabletop games, magic sets, light-up 3D models, and EXIT games, we are a trusted choice among parents, teachers, and industry experts. The cards that can be taken from the market are either used immediately (all non-blue colors) or are held for later use (the blue cards). The tricky part is knowing when to do these things and figuring out how to best perform these actions so that it leaves you in an advantageous position while leaving your opponents in a disadvantageous one. Imhotep: The Duel may or may not be like its predecessor – I cannot tell you how closely the two games align with each other. We definitely had a game where one player drew 5 Statues over the course of the game, and literally any other draw would have resulted in them losing, but they won instead.Sometimes the best dumping ground is the Pyramid, where an unlucky player can get one point for a stone while another player ends up with four points for a similar stone. The ‘A’ side to the obelisk; Players build their individual obelisks here and are scored at the end of the game, with the tallest earning the most points as indicated on the board. The multi-scoring system is very good, so you can't be sure who has won until the final scores are added up!
