Now, y'all know I'm the first to criticize an author who chickens out rather than putting their characters through legit plotting quandaries. It is a wonderful, heartwarming story of love, revenge, ambition and the determination to succeed against the odds. All she wants is marriage to her long-engaged partner James, not simply to free her from the place, but so that she could feel like an actual woman. She began work in service but eventually moved south to Hastings, where she met and married Tom Cookson, a local grammar-school master.Agnes is tethered to the place and her situation due to the precarious situation of her developmentally-delayed sister, Millie. From the very start, this story had me hooked and although we don't see much from Irene's point of view, it is about her - and what a wonderful hero she is. Her parents are sure it is an employee of the Ratcliffe's, Angus Cotton, who hotly denies this and quits his job to go and start his own business. Vanessa, who is duller than dishwater and twice as bland, gets seduced by her father’s friend, gets pregnant, and makes blank faces as her parents yell at her.
