About this deal

The terrestrial tuner in the UK model is Freeview Play. This means that there’s a full complement of Catch-Up TV apps on-board. Dish-fans will lead to look elsewhere, as there’s no satellite tuner option.

As with the JZ2000, these sets benefit from the colour tuning of Stefan Sonnenfeld, Founder and CEO of Company 3, and a trusted collaborator of some of the world’s best filmmakers. Combined with Panasonic technical colour accuracy, these new OLED TVs will set the benchmark for watching cinematic and premium content. This Panasonic makes good use of its ultra-thin, edge-lit form factor. It combines a wafer thin profile with a cool glass-on-frame design – the panel sits on top of the bezel, rather than be surrounded by it. It looks really neat. File formats that are not supported by your Network Contents server (DLNA compatible server, etc.) cannot be played.New for this year is an upgraded HCX Pro AI processor, which can analyse what type of content is being played and adjust picture settings automatically. While all the OLEDs in the lineup benefit from this AI mode, the JZ2000 is the only model that will also offer AI sound quality adjustments. The set’s mid-range status is evidenced by the rear panel connections. We get just a trio of HDMIs, plus two USBs ports, digital optical audio out, component AV and Ethernet. There’s also a CI slot for those that need it. Smart usability is also top notch. This newly refined version of Panasonic’s Home platform is easy to customise and use, but we really would like to see Disney+ onboard. However, you can watch Disney+ with one of the best 4K media streamers though, which don’t cost very much (although you do have to use an HDMI port connecting one).

The remote control is a standard Panasonic unit, distinguished only by dedicated Netflix and (in the UK) Freeview Play buttons. The introduction of the new HCX Pro AI processor in Panasonic’s higher-end sets means that Panasonic has now brought its previous generation HCX processor down to core models such as the JX800 series. So now even these sets will have access to the vast wealth of Panasonic colour science expertise. Dual Bluetooth Connection allows the TV to transmit sound to two separate Bluetooth devices simultaneously, meaning that, for example, both you and your spouse can listen to a film late at night via Bluetooth headphones without disturbing your children’s sleep. A new On Timer allows users to schedule a time when the TV will automatically switch itself on, while users can also pre-select a favourite channel, or which HDMI input they want to display. Alternatively, the TV can also show the new my Scenery feature.Indeed, at times it looks more like OLED than LCD – red and blue primaries are deep and lush. Leading Hollywood colourist Stefan Sonnenfeld has handled the final tuning for the set, undoubtedly contributing to the filmic solidity to its images. The most obvious negative is that there isn’t much weight to the sound. Gun blasts in the Deadpool freeway scene aren’t alarming or hard-hitting. You can toggle on the Bass Boost feature, but that’s missing the point. There are mid-range TVs that choose to champion bass, but often to the detriment of other areas of the sound. Sound Quality is also very good for the TV #although I read a few complaints#. I run the movies through my home theater system for sound #it makes a huge difference regardless of any TV you use#, but when I’m not or watching late at night, the sound the TV provides is more than adequate. With both Dolby Vision and HDR10+ compatibility, coupled to the brand’s HCX (Home Cinema eXperience) image processor, it’s aimed squarely at switch-on movie fans.

Comprehensive HDR support is the icing on the cake. Unlike comparable flatscreens from rivals like Sony, LG and Samsung, there’s no need to choose which dynamic metadata standard to support. This set does them all. In all, the HX800 comes highly recommended. Picture wise, the HX800 has a lot to live up to. Last year’s GX800 was a brilliant performer for the price. As it happens, little has changed. There’s the same sophistication to the HX800’s imagery, which belies its edge-lit LED specification. When a Bluetooth device is connected to the TV, it is possible that the Bluetooth audio output may not be synchronized (i.e. be delayed) with relation to the images on the screen. This is not a defect of the TV or the device. The delay time will differ depending on the device. The JX800 is also Panasonic's first TV with Android TV OS, which it apparently combines with some of the aspects of Panasonic’s own 'My Home Screen' operating system. Colour-wise there’s plenty of realism here too. Deadpool’s suit is a convincing dirty red – not too crimson and with plenty of variation. Equally, the skin of the henchman’s forearm is a genuine, though not particularly healthy, pinky-white.
