I could hug Lotus so tight for her appearance at the most crucial juncture, to save the story and save her sister. Kennedy Ryan does not shy away from showcasing what it means to be in an abusive relationship, both physical and emotional. Iris was such a strong and inspiring character and reading about her go through the worst period of her life was so heartbreaking but honestly a privilege to read.

Iris, our heroine, is one of THE BEST, one of the strongest and most resilient female characters you will ever read about. It’s that one night she had with August West before graduation that leaves them both with so many what ifs even years later. From there we get to see how Iris and August’s lives go on different paths; him in the NBA and her with her abuser, but somehow their paths always connect back to one another. Of course we then have August and oh my this man is one of the most caring and sweet book boys I've ever come across. There was a connection neither of them can deny, they just can't do anything because they're going on different paths in life.

Book heavy going due to the topic, and j found it difficult to read at times because of this, but I still enjoyed and connected to the characters the same. After the brutality she faced with Caleb, it was a love that helped her discover what a real relationship should feel like. There’s just this one-just this life, and we go where are choices take us and grow wiser from our mistakes.In my last review, in fact, I stated how if an author is going to talk about subjects such as domestic violence or heavy themes like it - it is their duty as an advocate against it to leave a little note at the end of the book that could help any potential victims. It's a hard truth and an eye opening novel about true love and spirit juxtaposed against true evil and hardship.

It made my heart hurt at times, but I think as difficult as Iris’s story was to read, it was more empowering than anything. I want to start by congratulating the author on doing everything right in the domestic violence front. I wore my emotions on my face throughout this entire experience (if I had a camera there you would see how impacted I was not only by the story, but by the way it was beautifully written).I adored this woman the moment we (the readers and August) met her, and she continued to impress me as I devoured each page. Long Shot spans over years and it gives the reader time to connect and invest themselves in Iris and August. Kennedy and her writings have been featured in Chicken Soup for the Soul, USA Today, Entertainment Weekly, Glamour, Cosmopolitan, TIME, O magazine, and many others. August and Iris meet at a bar at random and while they get along wonderfully, Iris is in a relationship with his rival. It's so easy to judge a person for staying in a toxic or abusive relationship, and even easier to tell them to leave.
